Over 3,500 Afghan Children Complete First Grade with ECW’s Support
3,542 children (1,746 girls and 1,417 boys) from Faryab province celebrated completing their first grade through Community-Based Education (CBE) and Accelerated Learning Programme (ALP) classes in October 2024.
With funding support from Education Cannot Wait (ECW), Save the Children helped these students to complete their first grade through its community-based education initiative.
While implemented by our local partner, Just for Afghan Capacity and Knowledge (JACK), Save the Children focuses on building capacity of partners, monitoring activity quality, and providing essential kits. These include class kits with whiteboards, attendance sheets, stationery, and charts; teacher kits with flip charts, pens, white paper, and lesson plan books; student kits with school bags, notebooks, pens, coloured pencils, and rulers; psychosocial support kits with child-friendly entertainment; winterisation kits with winter jackets, socks, hats, shoes, and Vaseline; and textbooks for all targeted classes and students.
Shabana* 8, one of the students, shared, “I am very happy that I can learn. I am able to read both the texts in my books and signs in my local community. Now I can read most of the banners in the market and shops. I can read my books as well. I like my class and my teacher."
Sohila*, a CBE class teacher, said, “My students are very engaged and enthusiastic about their lessons. They attend class every day with great eagerness. I’ve noticed that most of them are learning exceptionally well due to their interest in the subject matter. Shabana* is one of our most talented students; she attends class regularly and actively participates, and she is now able to read her books.”
