WASH Kits Helping Families Maintain Hygiene and Dignity in Faryab
With funding support from the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA), Save the Children has distributed WASH kits such as mini hygiene kits, which include bathing soap bars, soapboxes, toothbrushes, nail cutters, 1 bottle of shampoo, and other items; baby WASH kits such as shampoo, soap, towels, nail cutters, toothpaste, baby diapers, reusable baby diapers [baby moshama], baby plastic panties, etc.; and dignity kits that include soft cotton cloth, sanitary pads, toothbrushes, combs, petroleum jelly, underwear, etc. across eight districts of Faryab province. By the end of December 2023, the team had distributed 1,986 WASH (mini hygiene kit, baby WASH kit, and dignity kit) kits in Qurghan, Qaramqol-1, Qaramqol-2, Khancharbagh, Bilcheragh, Andkhoy, and Pashtoonkot districts.
At the same time, our WASH volunteers have been promoting hygiene practices across the eight districts of Faryab, such as handwashing at five critical times, environmental hygiene, personal hygiene, water hygiene, domestic and food hygiene, and diarrhea control. Beneficiaries of our hygiene promotion sessions have found them beneficial and have requested soap or shampoo to promote handwashing and encourage more children to participate. The team has also distributed soap to participants in the mass hygiene campaign participants. We have reached 8,034 individuals (and 5053 children) during the month and 38,253 individuals (24061 children) during 2023.
Zahid*, one of the beneficiaries, says, “These kits have changed our personal lives. Now that we know more about maintaining environmental hygiene and its importance, that's why diseases have decreased in our family. There should be more awareness sessions, but if refreshments are added to this session, it will be helpful."
