Promoting Benefits of Breastfeeding among Young Mothers in Sar-e-Pul

In Sar-e-Pul, 930 mothers were provided with the awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and related health and hygiene information through our health and nutrition sessions with mothers.

With financial support from the Freeman Foundation, Save the Children is providing essential services (health and nutrition, and health advice) for mothers with children under six months through the Mobile Health Team (MHT) in Sar-e-Pul province.  These sessions enhance their understanding of the benefits of breastfeeding for their children and the importance of nutrient food to protect their children from diseases and malnutrition.

Shamsia* (28), a Mental health and psychosocial counselor in Save the Children's MHT, said, “I have been working in this position one year now. During these times, I have conducted sessions with mothers on the value of nutrient food to raise awareness. It’s a crucial service for them because they lack access to other consultations on how to provide their children with good nutrition, especially for mothers with their first child. having nutrition-rich food is essential in preventing diseases and malnutrition.”

Nasreen*, a mother who participated in Health and nutrition sessions, said “I used to feed my one-month-old baby homemade cookies, and my baby always experienced discomfort with a bloated stomach. After consulting with a healthcare professional in this clinic, I learned that breastfeeding should be exclusively done until the age of six months. I was advised to supplement with donor milk if needed, as I had insufficient milk supply. And now I know how to feed my baby properly. After several consultations and guidance on proper nutrition and breastfeeding techniques, my milk has been increased, and my baby is now satisfied and thriving.”
