Building Children’s Reading Habit through Mobile Libraries in Northern Afghanistan
The sponsorship programme distributed mobile library boxes to 60 target schools in Faryab, Sar-e-Pul, and Jawzjan provinces with 124 different child-friendly books, benefiting a total of 32,811 children (14,325 girls and 18,486 boys) attending these schools. The initiative aimed to promote the reading culture and support the children's well-being. The impact of such initiatives on children's reading habits and literacy has been widely recognised, with studies showing that when books are readily available, children become more literate and better readers.
One of the students, Nazanin*, who studies in fifth grade, says, “I love these books. I take them to my home every week and read them to my younger brother. There are many interesting stories.”
Mujib*, who studies in the fifth grade, says, “Do you know what is fun about these library boxes? It can move around easily in each corner of the school and from class to class. Seeing the library box coming to our class makes me happy. I returned the book I had read and bought a new one. Library boxes have lots of interesting books, and I want to read each one of these books."
