Assistance continues for Afghan returnees in Torkham and Spin Boldak
Supported by the European Union, Save the Children Mobile Health Teams provide services in Nangarhar and Kandahar to support returnees from Pakistan. Seven mobile health and nutrition teams were stationed at the transit centres in both provinces to provide health and nutrition support to recent returnee families.
The Mobile Health Teams offer a range of services to both men and women, including Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Outpatient Diseases (OPD), Health Education, Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), Immunization (EPI), Nutrition, family planning, Antenatal Care (ANC), Postnatal Care (PNC), and referrals. On average, 90-100 individuals visit the MHTs each day to receive services related to mental health, general health, and immunisation.
Nooria*, a 30-year-old mother of five who returned from Pakistan a month ago and now resides in PD 5, shared her story. “My husband is unemployed and unable to afford healthcare for our children in private hospitals. This is my second visit to your clinic; my child, Sami*, is 13 months old and suffering from malnutrition.”
Dr Freshta*, a medical doctor at the MHT, highlighted that most patients are recent returnees living in challenging conditions near the KTC. The team typically sees 90-100 patients (both adults and children) daily, with an average of 10-13 cases of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) and Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) at the KTC. Patients with musculoskeletal diseases, anaemia in adults, and common childhood illnesses like Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD), and Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) infections are also treated and provided with appropriate medications.
