Inauguration of the Therapeutic Feeding Unit (TFU) in Jawzjan

Save the Children in Afghanistan opened a 13-bed Therapeutic Feeding Unit (TFU) in a remote village of Jawzjan province on 27 Nov 2023. This unit will provide inpatient treatment services for complicated malnutrition cases. It will cover one district of Jawzjan province that has around 10,000 people. Overall, the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate is 17.7 % in Jawzjan province.

Since the Taliban regained power in Afghanistan, the number of malnourished children has significantly increased as a result of unemployment, the economic crisis, and climate change.  Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) is the most extreme and visible form of malnutrition for children, where in some casesinpatient treatment is needed to stabilize the condition of the children.

We have rehabilitated the TFU building and equipped it with the necessary medicine and equipment for the treatment of critically malnourished children.

The TFU was inaugurated by Arshad Malik, Country Director of Save the Children in Afghanistan, and the Director of Provincial Public Health Department, Qari Zabiullah.
