Mother-to-Mother Support Groups Help Strengthening Maternal and Child Health

Save the Children has established seven new Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (five in Aqcha, one in Mengajik, and one in Qarqeen). A total of ten sessions have been conducted (four in Aqcha, three in Mengajik, and three in Qarqeen), with 105 participants (15 per group). The participants include lactating mothers, pregnant women, and caregivers of children aged 0-23 months. The sessions will continue for 6-9 months, providing essential information on breastfeeding and other maternal and child health topics. Refreshments such as biscuits, juice, and water are provided during the sessions.

A Mother-to-Mother Support Group (MtMSG) is a community support mechanism where pregnant women, mothers with young children, and other caregivers come together in a safe environment to exchange ideas, share experiences, and offer mutual support. These groups provide essential support and information on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices, including exclusive breastfeeding, continued breastfeeding, and the timely introduction of complementary foods starting at six months of age. By creating a space where mothers can share experiences, the groups help overcome barriers and build a network of trust and support among peers. This initiative is funded by the Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (BHA).

Badamgul*, the mother of an 18-month-old child and a participant, said, “I really enjoy attending these sessions because they help me learn more about how to feed my child and how to take better care of both my child’s and my own hygiene and health.”

Shazia*, a 7-week pregnant woman, remarked, “Since joining this group, I have gained more knowledge about the importance of my nutrition and mental well-being during and after pregnancy. I am now more educated about my overall health.”
